Personal Licence Course – FAQ’s
What will I be studying ?
The course covers a range of licensing areas including premises and personal licenses, protection of children, enforcement and penalties and responsibilities of alcohol retailing.
How long is the course ?
The course is normally delivered in one day 9am – 4.30pm including the examination. For onsite courses the timings are to suit your team.
How will I be assessed ?
The course is assessed by a multi-choice examination. This is taken under exam conditions and no books or learning materials are allowed. The exam has 40 questions and the pass mark is 28 out of 40.
What if I fail the exam ?
We will support you with further training until you are ready to re sit the examination
I have a disability/learning difficulty
We may be able to make reasonable adjustments for you in the exam eg large print for impaired sight, coloured paper for dyslexia etc If you or a member of your team taking the course have a learning difficulty or disability please contact us asap to discuss in confidence.
How long will my results take ?
Your exam will be marked by the trainer at the end of the session and they will be able to give you a provisional mark. Exam papers are subject to verification by our internal quality assurance team and the awarding organisation before the final award is issued.
How long will my certificate take ?
Once verified the awarding organisation normally post the certificates out within 10 working days. Certificates are posted to candidates within 2 working days of receipt. The average turnaround at the moment is approx 1-week from the exam
Can you deliver the course on our premises ?
Yes – if you have a group of people we can come to your venue and deliver the course. You will need to have a suitable room to deliver the training and it must be suitable for conducting the examination in. Please contact us to discuss your requirements
Who accredits the course ?
The personal licence course is assessed through Qualifications Network (http://qualifications-network.co.uk/) who are an Ofqual regulated Awarding Organisation. Where do I get my Personal Licence ?
You will need to apply for your Personal Licence through your local Licensing Authority (Local Council). You should apply to the council where you normally live. To find your local licensing authority check your postcode here – Find your Local Authority
How do I apply for my Personal Licence ?
You will need to send the following to your local Licensing Authority
- Complete Personal Licence Application form
- Declaration of criminal offences
- Basic Disclosure
- 2 Passport photos (one endorsed)
- Application Fee
- Original Certification of qualification – Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders
How much is my Personal Licence ?
The application fee is payable to your local Licensing Authority and is currently £37
How long will my Personal Licence last ?
All Personal Licences are now valid indefinitely unless surrendered or revoked.
Where do I obtain a Basic Disclosure ?
Basic Disclosures are obtained through the Disclosure and Barring Service. You can apply for the disclosure online here Basic DBS Check. The cost is currently £25
To apply for a basic DBS check you’ll need:
- all your addresses for the last 5 years and the dates you lived there
- your National Insurance number
- a debit or credit card
- your passport
- your driving licence
Who can countersign my passport photo ?
Similar to a passport application one photo should be countersigned as a true likeness by a professional person eg teacher, doctor, solicitor etc
What can stop me getting a Personal Licence ?
If you have any unspent relevant convictions as detailed in the Licensing Act 2003 your application will be referred to the Chief of Police in your area who may object to the issue of a licence. If they do the Licensing Authority will hold a hearing where you will be able to present your case. After the hearing, they will either grant you licence or reject it. If rejected you have the right of appeal the Magistrates Court within 21 days.
What are Relevant Offences ?

If you have an unspent relevant offence we strongly advise you contact your local Licensing Authority before sitting the course or applying for a licence for guidance..
Is a Personal Licence linked to my workplace ?
No – a Personal Licence belongs to you and has no links to the business you work in.
